Default Elastics types and uses (need info)

I have been out of the fold for some time now and need a little advice

Ok I got me a new pole I got a G8 to kick me off and hopefully get me back into the swing of things.

My question is what elastic is best suited for general fishing nowdays
I have looked at the hollow core its concept looks good but whats it like, are there any special knots required.

Can this stuff be used for say roach and skimmers on the canal or is it only available in larger diameters.

From memory I used to use the preston high vis elastics and occasionally Image elastic, has much changed in 8 years

Justin, get yourself a selection of latex elastics for your canal fishing - I think the sensas pure latex is the best, the Garbolino G-latex is also very good.

As for your carp tops, the Garbolino latex in 1.2 and 1.4mm is great for F1's and pasties.

If you are after the bigger lumps don't think you can go far wrong with Black Hydro by Daiwa.

I went out today and had a big spend up on the basics

I took your advice and checked out the latex, it seems quite nice it certainly has the stretch required, I had to get the preston slip system but at the cost its almost disposable.

whats the life span of the latex's they seem like they could be uv sensitive I know they spend most of there life inside the pole but they doo look a tad fragile

any thoughts

JC

Latex usually needs changing every couple of months, you can tell by checking it. The hollow elastics can last several seasons

i stopped using the pure latex because it needed changing so often, my advice is go for the garbolino instead of sensas latex it seems to last longer , I've gone back to original preston slip

Thanks for all the help guys

One last question on elastics

For commercials would you run your elastics through the long power top only or extend that into what is essentially the third joint as well

having done a few tests I feel the 5 ft power tops of this diawa dont give you enough room for the odd bigger fish and it looks like it would bottom out quite quickly, Iam now looking at extending this to the third, giving me approx 8 to 9 ft inside the pole.

As for the canal work I dont see any need for more than top two on the lighter elastics

I really need to get down the bank and sort this out but I like to have everytrhing in place or at least close before I get back out there.

Your thoughts ?

JC

Power top twos essentially replace a traditional match top 3. They are made of a stronger grade of carbon and with only one joint are stronger. Carp and hollow elastics should e run through both sections. Most poles this will typically give you between 8 and 11 foot.

This CAN be a bit long, if you find this to be the case use a winder bung and have the elastic on dacron, braid or fly backing enabling you to use a length of elastic a section and a half long (if this makes sense lol)

Canal work as you say, a tradtitionla match top two (usually around 6 foot) should be fine.

There is no problem with the latex elastics degrading, I have had some in my pole for 18 months and they are still fine, providing you use a crows foot to connect and not a stonfo they will last forever if you just take the odd inch off when the end becomes warn.
