Simon, that method was given to me by Ivan and I would take a guess at some 12 or maybe 15 years ago , he was a big inspiration to so many, having spent a lot of time with him at our local tackle shop his ideas and methods that sometimes sounded barmy always worked,

It was mentioned above about Kevin Ashurst saying never be afraid of lead, two guys out of the same mould (era)

I wonder do we over complicate things today ?

just out of interest this hook in the loop, do u think its havin the hook running in a loop or just the number 8 shot so close to the hook thats really makin the difference. i haven't used this rig yet but im gonna try puttin a shot right next to my hook (tied normally) to see if it helps with more positive bight indication.

As far as i'm aware Mr Cochrane's reason for not tying the hook but instead putting it in a loop is to allow the fish to right it's self after taking the bait without feeling any resistance to allow the fish to take the bait more confidently.

We definately over complicate things and also don't fish positively enough.

As for the hook in the loop method I think it is a combination of the no8 shot and the way that the hook can swivel and turn into the fishes mouth, the other side of the coin however is that you are having to fish an eyed hook which can never be as light as the same hook in a spade end pattern. Line diameter also comes into the equasion as you have two pieces of line either side of the hook.

Depths vary between 5ft and 1ft, rigs required for bottom and top of shelf.
Rigs are required to pick up the tow which is in the opposite direction to the wind.
Simon,
I think I am right in saying F1s are the ones without barbels if thats right then I think they feed slightly different to carp with barbels. The carp uses its barbels to search the lake bed for particles of food so maybe a strong smelling bait hard on the bottom is best.
Fish without barbels are more likely to feed by sight and therefore a lighter coloured pellet lifted off the bottom may be better for f1s. So for f1s I would use a shotting pattern that gives a slow fall through the last 18 inches of water and keep lifting it. Move the bottom shot closer to the hook if missing bites.

keep it simple, they either want it hard on the deck, or dropping slowly thru the swim , two rigs
