I feel a bit sorry for the youngsters who start out with a pair of Carp rods, Alarms and a bedchair and think that thats all there is to fishing; and then after a few years they just give up. The days of doing your apprentiship catching fish of all species are fast dissapearing. When I walk along the bank full of bivvies at one of our lakes I often think that if they were asked to catch a few Roach, Bream or Tench on float tackle they wouldn't know where to start; and most of them havent even seen a Barbel (apart from in pictures) and wouldn't know what to do if they hooked one from a weedy river using lighter tackle. Its a shame really.

Yes that is a very true story - but is it not down to the fact that all youngsters have to go at now is commercials as the whole sport has changed, there just arent enough clubs any more bringing youngsters through.

I'm waiting for the carp craze to end I'm convinced it will, some killer virus will wipe out all carp, probably wish full thinking.
Sorry for the rant I know a lot of people enjoy catching carp & most commercials are stuffed with plenty of silvers for the more discerning anglers to catch but carp just keep butting in and trash your swim or your tackle.
Like I said sorry for ranting on it only my opinion. Somehow think I've gone off the thread.

Richard the fish have only moved to 16m because for one the poles are now redily available at that length, and two that old art of coaxing fish out of the features is long gone,
Sadly people will insist on feeding the reeds or the far bank features and of course fishing there, after all who is gonna go serching for food if it keeps getting delivered

Don't be too concerned about fishing at length its not always the case, especially as the water temperatures warm up, the fish become more active matches get won down the edge or even 6 metres,

good luck with your switch, im just getting back too after 9 years
