Default pole fishing commercials

after years of feeder fishing for barbel,i have purchased a 2nd hand 12.5m carp pole and with the help of a couple of TA members,it is my intention to gain knowledge on this style of fishing and to hopefully start competing in matches,,the confusing issue at the moment is what size, style, brand of float for each tactic i.e margin fishing,or fishing at distance, fishing on bottom or up in the water and fishing various baits,,my quarry will be carp and silver fish on commercials,if anyone has any methods they use for calculating which float to use or if you have any favourite set ups or tips, books you could recommend then i would be interested and grateful to hear them, many thanks FL

Default Poleitus...

That's what you'll have F/L once you start using one...It's all about the presentation they offer, whereby you can used a lightish rig & have great control over it...
You can 'twitch it, lift it, tuck it into nooks & crannies that you'd struggle to reach via Rod n' Line...

Poles (Correctly balanced) to your target species, can also land fish quicker, than by conventional methods...

They are not the be-all & end all & have their limitations... (Try fishing full length in high-winds or holding one when it's bitter-cold)...
But they are now an essential piece of armoury & very enjoyable to use...
For commercial pools (Which is where I suggest you start) you only need to invest in a few floats to kick you off KC's do a good range, as do Preston & they're pretty common in most anglers kit...Around 4x12's, 4X14's & 4x16's'll cover most Carp Puddles...
It's all about depth or conditions (Wind again) stepping up to a heavier float if conditions go downhill...
Another reason to step-up is if the fish were 'avin'it' on the deck & you wanted to get your baited hook down faster via a 'bulk'...

The best floats are the ones you steal off your friends after softening them up with a luncheon meat and mustard sandwich!
My best advice would be to keep loose feeding with the sandwiches and fish a short line between tip and float also make sure your paste is very soft
Maybe a change to a different exotic type of meat would bring extra tips from your angling mates

Hope this helps

Liam typical rule of thumb 0.1 gram of float per foot of water,

I would start off with the Garbolino range of floats as they are cheap and robust the DC6 is ideal as it can be used tight up against features down the edge or down the track, they are also quite stable.

Your going to need a range of lines from 0.13 to 0.21 I would go for preston powerline or similar, to kick off I would set all your rigs up with stotz and ignore olivettes for the time being as srotz will cover both situations to a degree.

Thats 1 salmon and cucumber sarnie you owe me
