Default Carp deaths this year...

There seems to be lots of fisherys up and down the country suffering with fish deaths mainly carp this year, has anything been said in the angling press as too why??

It is probably KHV, but often fisheries choose not to report the deaths and blame it on spawning low oxygen levels etc. I believe that its a ticking bomb just waiting to explode of which no fishery is immune.

I am not sure that this is the consequences of over stocking. In all aquariums i have owned over the years if they are overstocked deaths occur and a natural level is found.Do we really know what happens ie oxygen levels.all the food that goes in.....is it really all eaten.... what are the waste effects from the fish if it is all eaten...

Its become very common over the last 2 years.Coinciding with severe floods and torrential downpours during the summer months when we should be having dry settled weather.Could the rain be having an effect?Or would it be even worse in an heatwave, and the colder rain is having a dampening effect on KHV.If the latters true then god help us if we ever get another heatwave.I dont know if any study has been done on the summer weather, but it seems too much of a coincidence to ignore.A lot of reports on KHV dont seem to start untill around july/august normally after months of warm but wet weather. We will only know if we ever get a dry summer again.

I'm with Larry on this one, and unfortunately anglers are to blame I think. Too many of us moan that a particular venue doesn't have enough fish, so farmers / owners give in and invest in more stock, which is higher than that recommended by the experts. Then we fish stuff like meat, catmeat and a method evolves that needs' you to feed 7 - 8 tins per match, and like Larry says, much gets wasted and begins to decompose, which causes a lack of oxygen. And this in a water with more fish than the surface area of water can support!

If the media switch from battery chickens to Carp, there will be hell to pay. And one of the worst, if not THE worst offender, British Waterways, the state sponsored custodians of Drayton, Boddington etc.
This will blow up in the near future , I fear that WE will be seen as the villans.

What do you think?

we had a problem up here at folly lake and after speaking to the owner he knew it was caused by a batch of infected stock fish 18 months earlier. apparently it only affected the existing fish i persume the stock fish were immune to the virus. he cured it with e.a. help by banging loads of medicinal pellets in. i dont buy the low oxygen theory obviously it doesnt help but usually when levels are low fish will refuse to feed as they instinctively know they will have trouble digesting food and become inactive till levels rise. i reckon those initial deaths are from fish which may have gorged on food then are hit with low levels while they are full of indigested food.
but i am in agreement match fishing has gone numbers mad tons double tons etc on commercials....i adore my winter fishing ....natural venues only....hard work ..lots of bites..... but few headlines. the press promote this ton up mentality and yes closer scrutiny would be damaging but a fishing match is a fishing match ...as my mate used to say he would rather come first with 1lb then 2nd with 40lb. match fishing should be about winning therefore 3lb of gudgeon winning a match on the local canal should have the same qudos as 150lb winning on a commercial ...but it doesnt to most.

Some say cat meat can give the fish a virous (dont know if it's true) but it has happend to a fishery in newquay where the fishing was great that was last year. Now all thefish in the lakes have been terminated and doesnt look like there gunna try to revive the ponds
