Default Float wire

I thought I would have a go at making some pole floats. I have sourced the balsa, cane and plastic, but have had no luck with the wire for the stems. Has anybody any ideas?

My mate got some off the Internet for float making but he had to buy a bulk lot . Just had a quick look and a few companies do the stuff from .2 mm up

Depends on what wire you need, finding straight lengths of stainless steel wire is quite difficult, normal piano type wire is available in nearly every toy model shop, probably the same plce you get your balsa.

What type of plastic tips did you get, i've found solid ones but struggling to get hollow type without them costing a fortune.

I could only find solid tips. The wire I found was not stainless, (model shop) and to be honest too heavy a guage, so in time it will rust away. Not ideal, but apart from ebay, sources seem to be few and far between. If anyone has any tips regarding pole float making, particularly the turning and shaping process, I would be very glad to hear from them.

Getting the bits and bobs together myself to have a crack at making some floats. As Roachman says if there are any tips about shaping the balsa etc I too would be very grateful.
All the best,
Mike.

Roachman, you will need a lathe ideally.. however thats probably a bit expensive although the model making ones can sometimes come up cheap on ebay. I have made alot of hand made flaots myself and have managed with an electric screwdriver mounted in a vice with a 1mm drill bit.
