Default Elastics and lengths

Been thinking about this quite a bit recently.

With the latest elastics do you think it is really required to put the elastic through the top 3 of the pole when fishing for lumps with the No1 removed?
What setups are you guys using and which elastics / length of elastic.

Slid Elastics 2 - 5: Through a match top 2, using a winder bung. 5 feet of elastic.

Solid Elastics 6+: Through a power top 2, using a winder bung. 7 feet of elastic.

Hydro: Through a top 3, number one removed. Half length of hydro, using braid and a winder bung.

What is with the name change!

The question of length of elastic has become interesting for me as I have recently been using some of the maver hollow green which is a 5-8 and five feet of it stretches to more than 20ft so I'm thinking of converting a load of my tops from top 3's to using the big bore top 2's which gives about 6ft of elastic.

Everyone calls me Dick now, so thought I'd change it haha!

I don't think theres any need for more than 5/6 feet of elastic as you say.Next time I change my thicker solids I'll be shortening the length used. particularly as some latex has a 6:1 stretch ratio!

What brands of latex are you all using? Had a 6 months spell using sensas but found it was rotting very quick , that's in sizes 3-6 so now back with original slip

I use regular vespe again now after a stint of using latex. it's not quite as soft.

Having a dozen match kits with latex in sizes 2, 3 and 4 got confusing cos they all looked the same lol!

No seriously i prefer it, the dying process means its not quite as soft, so sets the hook better in my opinion, but the effect when playing fish on elastics that thin is negligeable.

Yeah i know what you mean , i just thought that the extra stretch with latex was was great if you hooked a bonus perch etc but wasn't prepared to have to change it every 2/3 weeks

Keep half a dozen turns on a winder bung, then just cut off the end 2 inches and retie the connector/dacron etc ever few weeks.
