Default named brand or cheap

read a report that states the NAMED BRAND is making all the sales now.It states that the tacklefests are not getting as many people to them as in years gone by,imho i stared out buying a mixture of cheap and expensive items ie cheap (ish) pole, box, holdall, and good line, hooks, nets, etc. Then bought good pole, box, etc as and when i had money.Do you think cheap goods at tacklefests are a bargain or as article states a waste of money, and a branded name is better in long run,ie pay for what you get..

As you may know a lot of the named gear is made in the same factories as the so called cheep stuff. So i have no problem with the cheap gear. Just look at the likes of Hardys. They built up a great reputation for hand made top end tackle. Now they import most of the gear they sell from the far east. Probably form the same places as the likes of used tackle/dragon carp.

I like to use trusted brands such as my favourite Daiwa or Shakespeare. It's up to everyone's own preference or what they can afford. Not everyone has the income to spend loads of money on a new pole or seatbox and there is nothing wrong with that as there are some real bargains to be had. But I believe you get what you pay for so I would rather wait until I can afford to buy what I want rather than choosing the cheaper option.

While i agree this is sometimes the case, you need to understand that quality of materials will differ.

Take a range of poles ranging in price but made off the same mandrel, the top end pole will have a higher quality material than the lower range pole even though they come from the same place. i also believe that while some items will be marketed by well known and unknown brands but the backing, guarantee and reassurance from the top names will always draw the customer back.

Personally, i follow keith's rule, buy cheap, buy twice.

A factory in say the far east makes gear for a big name brand. They make some with the supirior matirials and put the named brand logos on. In the same factory they then make gear with cheaper matirials and have a different name these are sold off at the tackle fests and are regarded by many as cheap rubbish. The same gear with the named branding on is sold in the shops for a lot more and mugs buy it as they think as it has a name it is better. I have had loads of gear over the years both named and the cheap stuff and have had a lot of named gear let me down. Is it really worth the extra cash on rods and the like just for a name.
