try chop worm an caster for the bigger fish feed far bank shelfs at 2 positions 10 o clock and 2 o clock leave it for a while before trying it, but keep loose feeding the odd few casters over the top. while your waiting for the swims to hopefully spring to life, keep yourself busy catching the roach, then hopefully the bonus fish will come later from far swims.

Agree with the chop worm and caster for the far bank shelf, for the track try hemp and caster, or even liquidized bread and the punch for the small roach, try adding a bit of hemp in with the liquidized bread, slip on a grain of hemp every now and then to see if the better fish are responding to it.

Steve's right Dazz bait up and gear up for the bigger fish bottom of the far slope and pick out the roach in front of you till you see signs of those tench feeding, then drop a worm on there heads!
I'm no canal angler but the drains around here (fens) fish similar.
Keep an eye out around you and gauge whether you should be sitting it out for the tench and bream or spend most of the match swinging in small roach. If I wasn't happy like you with second place then I would sit it out for the bigger fish.
Do a blog or let us know how you got on good or bad, others can learn from your match report.
Good luck with the match Dazz.

if the roach are really small i would use punch crumb instead ot liquidised, not as much feed in it

I was after big roach on a canal once and used tares and hemp. Tare on the hook and fed about 5 pieces of hemp, it takes ages for them to come on, but when they do you'll know about it!

Get some proper lobworms for chopping, Tench love em', put them in with caster and then drip caster over the top. I'd go .14 main line and .12 hook length. If you use the licky, try laying on with a big punch as well. Get the roach on a light rig, and just try the big punch if it go's quiet, could be bream or tench pushing in!
