The only bait ban Nigel at Barston dictates is no floating baits. This is to protect the wildfowl.

Paul my mate Harry and I fished the Barston Match Pool last week pegs 1 and 2 before the rains. As is his custom he fished the pole at 7 metres and threw out a groundbait feeder at the same time. I reckon this is why he catches twice as many fish as me!! He caught a mixture of carp and skimmers on the feeder with double red maggot and a few carp on the pole.I fed pellets and a little corn towards the island which is in the reach of most pegs. They didn't seem to relish either. From about 5' the deepest at 6 metres the depth gradually sloped up to only about a foot by the island.I started against the island but no fish seemed about. Coming in to the 6metre again no action on pellet or corn.Switched to single maggot straight away caught the biggest carp for either of us about 4lb. They only seemed to want the maggot.Caught decent skimmers and carp of about 2 lb apiece spasmodically. From 3 pm stated catching more regularly ,but the light began to fail and we packed in at 4pm.
There was only one other angler who was fishing purely with corn against the island in the shallow water at about peg 9. He reckoned to have caught quite a few 4lb carp, I only saw him missing them, but they did seem to be homing in on his corn.
Can't help thinking we'll be scratching around for skimmers!!
