Hi Firetrap

Ive fished Hawford Bridge alot over the last couple of winters.

Top Pool (the biggest of the 3) You are loooking at catching 1-2lb stockie carp to do a big weight there are loads of bigger carp plus alot of ghosties but they can be unpredictable at this time of year. Most of the pool, depth wise is allover the place shallow near islands and great big ledges in open water look to fish 14m out 16m better try to find flat spots spend a long time plumbing up. The water is very clear but could have extra colour if we have heavy rain. Feed little and often with maggot, pellet and sometimes corn being the best bait. There is a very good chance you might need 70lb+ to win your match. The waggler has been very good this year wining a fare few matches look to fish 2-3ft but you cant fish it from every peg due to there being loads of islands. The last couple of winters the owner has allowed the use of ledgering - lead only but have been told in some matches he has allowed the maggot feeder. So ask the owner what you can use before the draw. There is not a big head of silvers, some big perch and some gud chub but not worth targeting.

Middle pool

Same as above (fish wise and tactics) the winner can come from anywhere the fish move round alot you will see this during your match in the clear water the carp are always visable. To me this pool is the best but you dont want anymore than 15-16 people fishing on this pool. Some barbel in here aswell and alot more chub.

Bottom Pool

An Island runs most of the middle look to fish up to it you should have over 3ft on most of the pegs. The fish seem to swim round the island allday so you should pick some up during the day. The pegs which back on the middle pool are the noted flyers and should have loads of 1lb-2lb stockies shoaled up that area look to fish 14.5m - 16m out there the island is about 20m away in that area. Some gud barbel in this pool.

Even in the winter you can use over 3 pints of pellets and the same with maggot. So little and often on all the pools is the way to go. One last thing I have done to catch me extra fish is try 3,4 or sometimes 5 maggots on the hook it can get you extra fish.

The biggest tip is spend a long time plumbing up for those flat spots.

Okay its pretty hard to explain cuz there is no peg numbers, you really dont want to be roadside, anywhere in the middle with your back to the middle pool is good, and you can fish the waggler there aswell. You dont want corner pegs, i would be happy with open water again plumbing up you can find sunken islands, but i have found flat spots better. On this pool start on pellet if you are struggling switch to red maggot look to catch on the deck its deep so keeping them down is hard at times. Its upto 14foot in parts look to fish long. The one corner peg on your right when you first come to the pool is a flyer you would have rushes to your left the rest of the corner pegs leave out if you can. If i drawed anywhere in the middle of the 3 banks i would be happy there are loads of fish.

if i had of seen this earlier i would of told you to stay in bed, the local tackle shop is running a league on that pool i guested on the first match but drew well and came 2nd middle of the caravan bank, winner came middle of the bank that backs onto the middle pool the other two sides were rock hard and the road bank was won with 1 carp, on there 2nd round 10 out of the 16 blanked!

The Middle pool in winter is very fair the winner can come from anywhere with poss big weights aswell. I havnt fished the top pool this winter, but some of my club mates have and it hasnt fished to good but you dont want anymore than 18 on it. The road side was never pegged, even in summer you dont want to be there. I think the difference in the place is the fact there seems to be so many matches on the venue. Ive fished the place for about 6 years way before the stockies went in and if there was more than 5 anglers there it was a busy day, now its booked solid and the fish dont have to feed so much, due to all the extra bait going in they can be alot more fussy. Unlucky Firetrap it is a good winter venue in fact i would rather fish the place in winter than summer as the fish are at alldepths and can be hard to tempt. Firetrap if your looking for a good fair winter match venue check out ockeridge its the best winter carp venue in that area.
