Default Wyrley & Essington Canal Pelsall

Venue : Wyrley & Essington Canal Pelsall
Location: Norton Road B4154 Pelsall from York Bridge (Fingerpost pub) for 2km running west to Freeths Bridge at Fishley – see map link

Streetmap.co.uk- search results

Description: Cashmores AC control 101 permanent pegs 20 yards apart on this section of canal predominantly in a rural setting which see’s little boat traffic. There are distinctive sections along the canal including the ‘straight’ common (pegs 1-37) and more sheltered sections from Wood Lane Bridge (peg 38) moving west to Freeths Bridge.

Because of little boat traffic, the canal can be clear during winter months, but substantial vegetation – pads, cabbages and sedges - establish themselves during the summer, particularly on pegs 40 onwards. The canal is noted for it’s tench, typically 3lb but reputed to run much larger. As well as roach, perch, skimmers and bream for the match and pleasure angler to target, specimen hunters also target large carp and pike that inhabit the canal.

Season tickets are available £5 per annum running from 16th June each year

Match bookings are also welcomed at £1 peg

Well I originally booked the day off to take JK to the dentists for an extraction, but secretly arranged to meet up with Cotti the Warburton King later in the morning.

Arrived at Wood lane a tad later than expected, only to see Cotti marching in the horizon, whereas I expected to drop on one of the rhs pegs close to the bridge.

Gear out of the car, off I traipsed after him

He’d dropped on peg 53 to get out of a bit of a devilish skimming easterly winds, so I plonked myself on 54, which was Lasher’s peg on the last Cashmores match.

Cotti had picked up our bait – all of ½ of caster and ½ pinkie between us.

The plan – fish the punch for a few silvers and firtle a few pinkies and caster in for anything else sniffing around.

Punch rig was a 4x10 seed float with a size 20 PR31 direct to 0.06 (1.4lb). Also set up was a 4x10 TBF cult in a monstrous 2.6lb – aint got a clue why I set that up.

A couple of punch lines were fed, short and long.

By the time I started on the short line, Cotti had already picked up about 5 roach on his longer punch line. First look and a roach. And again, And again. It was a bite a put in, but no stampers all 1-2 oz, despite a fairly large piece of punch being used.

After about 15 fish, float slips under and I lift…………….lackie shoots out. Sh*t it’s a tinca. Play it for about 10 mins and am grateful that the fine wire hook has held and done its job. Probably knocking 2.5 pound.

Inside line refed after that skirmish and a look across on the longer line. Same patter, a bite a chuck, this time from roach and rudd. Again only small 2ozers but I’m happy to put fish in the net.

Float dips again and a lift……………sod it…………another tinca. Again play this gently for 5-10 mins and the rig holds out again. Ditto, another about the 2.5lb mark. 40 mins in, and I’ve about 6-7lb in the net………cant be bad.

Back on the inside, more roach. Float dips, lackie comes out another tinca. Play this for about 5 mins, but I’m getting a bit cocky and a lean into it a bit to much see’s me part company. A look at the rig……………reason – PR31 has snapped.

Refeed and across again. More roach and rudd then tinca no 4 puts in an appearance.

1.4lb bs is again put to the test………but this time tinca snags me in a load of weed.

Ok………..lets play games. Out with the other rig this time, but with double pinkie. Roach and rudd are having it one a chuck. Start feeding the pinkie and caster on this line.

A bite every put in. If no bite within 2 mins…………I know what’s coming. Yep, tincas keep putting in an appearance.

By now Cottis also had one about 2 lb and his mates come down to see how he’s getting on. Cotti’s mate has never fished with a pole and gives it a go. He’s having roach and rudd across too. Then he has a battle with a tinca and gets it out, cuss Cottis stepped upto 2lb hook length after his first tinca.

Anyway, to cut things short, I ended up with 8 tincas, including a couple of better stamp ones around the 4lb mark, with a bream of a couple of lb in between.

Not a bad days fishing on the clubs canal– and all on a slice of bread and ¼ each of pinkie and caster…………..no wander I ran out of bait which forced me to call it a day
