Mellors Pool (Whiston Merseyside)
Hello,
I thought i would add my local club lake. The lake is called Mellors Pool and is located in Whiston just outside Liverpool and is run by Whiston Village Angling Club. There are 36 pegs on the like. Annual membership is available at £12 per year senior (£5 signing on fee) and £4 junior (OAP's Free Lifetime Membership). Day tickets are also available on the bank from the bailiff (who happens to be me) £3 senior and £1 junior. The lake is also available for club matches. In my opinion the lake is one of the best silver fish venues in Liverpool, regular Monday evening matches are won with 25lb of skimmers and bream caught on pellet, although up in the water on caster can be very productive for roach. Unfortunately the head of carp are not as large as in the past due to a fish kill last year, the biggest reported this year is 19lb, however when the fish died none of the 20lb plus carp were found. Three years ago chub around 3oz were stocked and have rapidly grown with the vast majority being in excess of 1lb and some tipping the scales at 3lb. Work is contually taking place on the lake, over the winter a flood and blocked drain caused damage to a lot of the platforms, however recently i have refurbished and replaced over 30 of the platforms. Work is soon to be undertaken to restore the pathways. Should you require any further information please feel free to contact me.

Hi Mikey. Hows Mellors fishing at the moment? Was hoping to have a go on Saturday 01/11 and was wondering what baits/methods to use. Has the recent rainfall had any effect on the fishing there? Would appreciate any advice you can offer! Cheers mate and hope to see you Saturday (work allowing! ;-) )

Hi Mikey, just joined this website and searched for local venues, I'm in Liverpool so how do I go about getting to fish your club lake? Is it possible to join your club? Any advice would be much appreciated, thanks.

Hi mate i fish at mellors a lot. In the summer the lake fishers brillaint every time you put in your bound to catch a fish from roach to bream maybe the odd chub or carp. The winter isnt as good as the summer but like i say your going to catch fish. Its great to sit down with a cup of coffe and enjoy the fishing.

Servo, that sounds good to me. I found a great download today from the Environment Agency detailing every water in the North West southern region and it mentions Mellors Pool, I rang the contact number and spoke to a really helpful guy at Rays Tackle on Pilch Lane who said the lake is frozen at the moment so I'll need to wait for the big thaw
The document was really useful so here is the link:
http://publications.environment-agen...-e.pdf?lang=_e
I'm looking for local venues because I work and need to balance work/family/fishing as does everyone else and thought a nice local venue thats easy to reach would do for a couple of hours during the week after work around tea time particulary in the Summer. Have you joined Whiston Angling Society or do you know how I go about that? I've left a reply for Mikey but he must be out and about at the moment, hopefully fishing
There is also a lake owned by University of Liverpool (who I work for), its down at Wyncote sports ground by Rose Lane in Mossely Hill/Allerton and I'm trying to find out who fishes from there as a club/syndicate look after it. It is free to Uni staff but I'd rather join the club and contribute to its up keep, there is also less hassle about staff freebie fishing and fighting over the best pegs!! I'll let you know the outcome of that.
So where is Mellors Pool, I can see its off the B5199 but Google maps don't show it very well is there a nearby road name?
Cheers,
Grazy1367.

Hello Grazy,
Sorry i am only just getting back to you but i have been having a few internet problems lately, hopefully they are now resolved. So were to begin well its upto you wether or not you join the club. A day ticket to my knowledge still remain at £3 per day senior and £1 junior. However there is a senior annual membership which is £14 and a £5 signing on fee for the first year. If i were you i would definately take up the annual membership, not only do you get to fish Mellors Pool but Whiston Village Angling Club is also responsible for Carr Lane Lake, so for £19 you get two lakes. If you decide you would like just to try the lake for a day then day tickets are availible on the bank, however if you decide to take up the years membership you need to go into Whiston Discount shop in Whiston Village and speak to Wally the club treasurer, hes a really nice fella who will go out of his way to tell you exactly what you need to know. As for the location of Mellors if you come off the M62 from Liverpool and follow the signposts off the motorway for Whiston, the lake is approximately 1/2 mile off the roundabout and the turning is opposite St Nicholas church, it is really easy to find (if you look on google maps an view as satellite you can see an overhead view, just search St Nicholas Church Whiston). As regards the lake, i dont no what type of fishing your into whether it be match. carp or general pleasure but theres everything in there. i started fishing there about 20 years ago and i have seen some dramatic changes, matches use to be predominantly carp and tench, however about 12/13 years ago over 700lb in weight of carp were removed and sold, the money from this sale was then used to buy roach and bream, about 3 years ago 1000 chub about 3oz in weight were introduced. During last summer i was bailiff of the lake and ran Monday night matches were the average winning weight was 25lb of skimmers and roach with bream to 4lb. Of a Thursday daytime there were also matches and the average weight was more like 30lb. One thing i must disagree with Servo about is him saying winter isnt that good, if anything the winter some people will argue is better, this is when the chub that were 3oz more like 1.5lb and bigger now really start to show. As servo has said the lake is currently frozen but i no the matches have started of a Sunday again until March, this does not mean you cannot fish, if you go down an ask the match organiser he will find you somewere. If there is anything else i can help you with please feel free to contact me either here or at my email address mikeyliverpool@hotmail.com, if you have msn feel free to add me.

Mike, thanks for the info, very useful. I'll take a trip up there this weekend and try to see Wally also suss out the venues and parking etc. I've found Mellors Pool on Google Maps, is the Carr Lane Lake also know as Big Water at the end of Main Drive and what looks like a caravan site? Off to keep a mate company fishing the Mersey tonight in Birkenhead, he has a beachcaster but I've only got my float rod at the moment so should be fun still its a couple of hours fishing and beats watching the telly. I'll let you know how it goes at the weekend, cheers.
