Ah, the old 'Winfield' specials Paul. My pride and joy was a milbro match and Intrepid Black Prince reel (bloody awful things compared with modern reels) loaded with Maxima or Winfield depending on Dad's generosity with the pocket money. Woolies in Southgate also did hooks to nylon under the Winfield banner but shots and floats came from Slingsbys.
I've never fished Haverholme and tried, but failed, to find it on Live Search Maps. Kirkby really was a lovely place to fish and Culverthorpe used to throw up a few surprises as well. We also used to cycle to the South Forty Foot at Little Hale Fen for a bit of free fishing, although I suspect it wasn't actually free, but there were no signs and we were never challenged.
I can recommend the Match Lake at Woodlands, early 40s pegs and a pair of method rods, hair rigged corn on one and S Pellets or Mistral 8mm Dusted Halibut pellets on the other. I heard that prawn scores well, but it didn't for me.
I note you were a 'sometimes' purchaser of a Slingsbys day ticket for Kirkby. How familiar!!!!!!!

Steve, Thanks for the link, I will have to view it again when I log on via the home PC , unfortunately the work system won't let me into it, just get a black screen. Phil, thanks for the tips re Woodlands, I'll certainly give it a go. 'Intrepid Black Prince', ha, yeah, I had one of those, state of the art, not. Mate of mine really went up market and bought a Mitchell Match, he was obviously getting more pocket money than me, or a bigger paper round.

Paul, I, too, moved on to the finger dab Mitchell 440 Match (also bought a 300 for light legering). Lovely reels for the time but would be considered heavy and crude perhaps by today's standards (wot!! no skirted spool???). And it was a bloody big paper round cycling from Cedar Avenue to the newsagents in Southgate and then the paper round in the Rauceby railway crossing area. Hated Fridays, the Sleaford Standard was a mighty heavy paper!!

Forgot to mention, if you fancy the small carp lake at Woodlands, try bread flake fished on a controller. The missus used to bring me my bacon and sausage sarnies down to where I was fishing (we were staying in one of the lodges). Not wishing to eat maggot smeared bread, I used the bits I was holding as bait just to see if it would work - and did it!! Might have been the hint of brown sauce perhaps. I also caught a small carp on a piece of cooked sausage. Catholic tastes those fish. Good fun all the same.

Default Bait at woodland water, Ancaster

    Hi to you all.

I have fished woodlands about 6 times now and seem to be having problems catching. What is the best bait to use? I normally use maggots and hemp. I have started fishing with my pole but not having much luck. Oh and i fish on the match lake.

    Thanks
    Dave

Hi Dave, when I visit Woodlands on holiday I tend to spend most of my time on the Match Lake. My fav peg is on the car park side looking across the lake towards Ancaster church steeple (was married there, romantic or what!!). For silvers, double red maggot on a 2lb hooklength and 3lb mainline waggler fished about 3 or 4 rod lengths out does it for me. Lose feed maggots and hemp by all means but I also use a Lake or Canal Groundbait (Sensas). For bream and tench (might be a tad early for tench) a method feeder with a fishmeal/vitalin mix groundbait with either double sweetcorn or Mistral Dusted Halibut Pellets (8mm) hair rigged to a size 12 Kamasan 911 or Preston PR36 hook. 8lb mainline with 7lb hook link. I've had some really good bags of fish (bream, tench and carp) using this method. Hope it works for you.

Christ almighty that's going to really hit the business side of the park. I'm not booked there this year so I won't have to go walkabout in Ancaster for a pint.

I've had many a good pint and meal in that place. It's tragic that some bloody idiot can't stop playing with matches.

The police are looking for 3 men seen running from the place to the back lane, so it doesn't sound like an accident.
