woodland waters ancaster
A friend told me that they were at Ancaster last weekend and that they have introduced free pike fishing in the match lake for this winter.
It appears they want to move the predators out and ask you to put catches into the specimen lake and the plan is to introduce barbel and another new species I can't remember. if this is true, time to fish out the lures and then roll on summer

woodland waters barbel introduction
Oh dear. I've had two consequtive summer breaks here staying in one of the lodges. The match lake is far and away the best lake with the small carp lake and birch pool good for the kids. I'm not surprised they want to put pike into the specimen lake - I didn't think there was much in there anyway (well, I couldn't catch anything!!). I understand you are also required to relocate any carp over 10lb caught in the match lake into the speci lake. The match lake has an envious reputation for some cracking tench and bream fishing and I hope any introduction of barbel won't have a detrimental on these species. Barbel introductions don't always happen without snags.
I note you are from Sleaford where I was born and raised before joining the navy back in 1971. I used to nick the odd trout from the Slea and read about the terrible pollution incident. Question, is the Slea fishable for coarse fish?? Is Kirkby La Thorpe ballast pit still fishable? Used to get a ticket from Slingsby's in the old days!!! Culverthorpe was also another old haunt. Love to hear if they can still be fished. Might chuck a bait out later in the year when I come up for hols.

Tried to find out from the EA if the Slea is fishable but no joy, owner of Dave's Peg (local tackle shop) said it was around Haverholme but all I know of is out Kyme way.
Culverthorpe changed owners and closed to the public and I don't know about the ballast pits around the Maltings and Kirkby.
Does anyone know if these are accessable and who to contact

Thanks for that Steve. Much appreciated. I was quite intrigued to see the EA had stocked the Slea with dace, amongst other species, as the last time (couple of years back) I saw it there was little in the way of flow and the levels were down. I suppose those huge rainbows that used to live in the river near the road bridge succumbed to the pollution. They grew fat on bread and bits of pork pie that passers by used to throw at them. Kirkby was a gravel pit and great for tench and we used to cycle there after school and bag up on some cracking tench we caught on bread.
Spent a few bob in Dave's Peg when I was last up having finally located him in Westgate after he moved from the corner of London Road. I seem to remember almost buying his entire stock of buckets of hemp having found that the bream and tench on the match lake at Woodlands were partial to it. Thanks again.

Hi lads the slea in sleaford as still got a few trout in but there is a problem round this way with migrant workers taking fish, the slea around sleaford as never had a coarse fish population that i've seen. Last year about 20 kio carp were dumped in the slea and could be seen competing with the ducks for bread, they seem to have gone the same way as the trout. Haverholme park as got a good head of silvers as well as carp to 25lb unfortunatly he as had to put a gate on the road and banned keep nets to stop migrant workers from taking the carp which he has caught several hiding nets under the platform with carp in. There is a pond next to the slea near the council offices which was free and good for roach and dace but they emptied it to dredge it and never put any fish back so the kids have no free fishing.

Thanks for the info Steve. I think I remember the pond you are referring to as Lollycocks? It was opposite my old primary school, Alvey School.
I've also heard about the migrant farm workers causing problems on the drains up towards Boston. My mother lives in Boston and there's been issues I believe with the South Forty Foot around Swineshead Bridge. I just wish the boffins could genetically modify a cormorant to taste like a carp or bream. Perhaps they'd leave our fish alone and eat those damned things instead.
The state of the Slea is a bit sad. I remember in the late 60s the river being full, fast flowing and toppers with trout and the odd chub. The river frequently overflowed it's banks onto the allotments just past the rail bridge on West Banks and there was a little side drain which ran from the Drove side, along a pathway and then turned to run parallell with the Slea and joined it just the other side of the castle causeway road. I promise you, this little drain had some good roach and big eels in it although it's probably been drained now. It's very sad that the local kids don't have any free fishing.
Should hopefully be up there later in the year. Would be nice to meet up and have a fish somewhere local. I normally stay at Woodlands but beginning to get slightly out of sorts with the place. And, unless he's already done so, he needs to shoot a few of those Canada geese. They really were a nuisance. Thanks again for the updates - much appreciated.

DND - Thanks for the offer, I was up there yesterday but not a lot of joy, mainly roach off peg 26, you fish it a lot then?
stevejd - I hadn't seen that one, do you know anything about it?
I meant this one - Flash Earth ...satellite and aerial imagery of the Earth in Flash
Anyone know anything? I heard through a friend of a friend they'd fished it a few years back and had a fair few pike so you'd think there's other stuff in there.
