Not just a lady, but a beginner too....no hope!!
This is probably going to sound like a really stupid question, but when I go into a tackle shop there's an array of stuff with which to fish.
I'm new to all of this, but when I fish I put bait on my hook, cast and hope for the best.
People come over to talk to me and ask questions and I feel totally stupid cos it's like they're talking a foreign language, when they talk about wagglers, fishing from the top etc etc.
How do I learn about all of this stuff, cos I want to know what I'm doing. Is it simply with experience?
I adore fishing and would love to go into a tackle shop and know what I'm talking about!!

Hey LadyFish.
The best adivce i could give you would be go fishing with expiernced anglers. I myself fish in a couple of matches from time to time i never win but i go purely to see what they do and ask them for best set up best bait best location.
Asking lots of questions makes me feel a bit stupid at times personally but its worth it as recently my fishing skill's have really improved and and as my catch rate.
Also i spend alot of time reading angling books or pages on the internet to brush up on my skills.
Even better bob nudd has various DVD's in the pound shop which are great.
Enjoy your fishing

We where all beginers at one time Lady Fish and we all asked realy stupid questions at one time or another and if truth be known we still all do.Even the likes of Will Raison,Alan Scothorne and Sandra Scothorne had to start by asking questions and look how the turned out World Champs.
Any angler wothe his or her salt will tell you most things (except wat is winning them a lot of money lol ) and all the tackle shops will if they are any good will give you advice and will not sell you anything you do not want
Have a walk round some waters and look and see who is catching and ask them questions sit and watch and you will learn a lot Join a club and you will learn a lot very fast as it will be a very steep learning curve and again ask questions ,most clubs that I know of are all ways looking for new members and no doubt there will be some one who will be more than happy to take you under there wing.Make friends within the club and out side and go fishing with them.
One thing I found helpfull to me when I started fishing was to keep a little diary of what i did and if i caught and if I did not I would try something else
Most of all ASK on here you will get all the help you want

hi ladyfish, if you can try and join a small club, and you will find that normally in most clubs there are one or two very good anglers who will put you on the right methods, baiit, tackle and explain the best ways to tackle different venues. my advice would be to go along to a couple of the club matches and sit behind those anglers who keep on getting results, they only get results on a regular basis because they have most methods sussed, if you see them do something and you are not sure why they are doing it, then don't be afraid to ask. you will find that most anglers will be only to willing to share there knowledge with you, especialy when they see you start to get results.
there are a few basic fundamentals to fishing, and when you get those right , then the rest will fall into place in time.
good luck
dave

Wow, what a lovely lot you are!!!
Thank you for your advice, I will no doubt feel like a bit of a stalker when I sit behind fellow anglers, but I will do it if it means I'll learn stuff.
Thanks all

You just gotta watch, listen and read. Read books that give you the basics - my favourite is 'Go fishing Techniques' by John Wilson (watch him on the telly too) - basic methods that work and can be adapted to any situation. Learn about your quarry - what they eat, where they feed in the water column, what part they play in the ecosystem (a natural one that is, not like commercial pools where the ecosystem is unrecognisable!) their breeding cycles etc. The more you learn about the creatures you are trying to catch, the more productive your fishing will be. Discover how you can spot signs of fish in the water before you even tackle up. It used to be known as WATERCRAFT.
Good luck Ladyfish. If you are anywhere near Worcester, come and have a go on our established naturalised pools. web page = Victorian Ponds and we'll give you a few tips.
