Default newbie (pole fishing)

hi
new to talk angling but not fishing. ive been fishing on and off most of my life (49 now) just bought a licence after about 5 year lapse in the sport. am in the process of buying a pole mainly for canal, as i live about 50meters from the erewash canal. I have never fished with a pole and was hopeing that members of the forum could give me some tips.
cheers

Welcome to the site Hunter, fishing the pole gives you more control with bait presentation and of course accuracy, choice of pole has never been harder as there are that many to choose from but the old logic of handling a few before making your choice always holds good and your tackle dealer should be happy to put a few up for you, and to sort out elasticating the top kits for you. Most anglers are friendly people and will again probably let you have a hold of their pole at the end of a session. If you need help with specific poles dont be afraid to ask we can put you right.
If you are not into making your own rigs there are pretty reasonable ready made rigs available. Get and wet a line or two and line up your questions I am sure the lads on here will put you right.

welcome hunter where abouts u fishing m8 i used to fish there before i was coverted into commercial fisherys.regarding poles try out a few first see what you like erwash nothing bigger than 13mtrs try the exage thats 14.5 and price is rather good and the pole is top notch comes with plenty of spares(i have the shimano speedmaster 16m) and love it to bits. if you intend to go for the likes of maver i suggest going to peg one Rods_and_Reels, Poles_and_Pole_Care, Hooks, Bait_and_Accessories, Clothing_and_Accessories, Landing_Nets, Floats, Seat_Boxes, Chairs_and_Bedchairs, Luggage, New_Products, Peg One and speak to lee and mention me(rick) he might do ya a good deal,if i can help anymore let me know.

hi
again
i have fished canals before (about 3 years ago) i live just off station rd ilkeston and have lived there for 20 odd years but i have only ever fished with rod not pole. i fish between station rd and gallows inn as this is within walking distance cos i dont often have the car, at its widest along this stretch its probably about 15 mt and at narrowest is about 10 and anything upto 8ft deep in places, (were there arn't any bikes or shoping trolleys). I have been offered a DAM 8M ignite pole for about £30 any comments, i know it may not be first choice but i have a fair bit of tackle to buy so am limited to how much i can spend, bearing in mind i am only a pleasure angler (@ the moment lol)
cheers

not heard of that pole to be honest but to as a starter it would get you going, then if you do like pole fishing you could invest in a bigger and better pole.
what is you max budget on a pole you would spend?
ideal lengh would be 13 to 14.5 then you can get to the other bank if need be.i know where you fish as well and i know how bad it can be but good fishing if the conditions are right.let us know if you need more info im sure we can help
