Just a quick hello as I've just joined this group. I've not fished for the last 30 years (usual marriage, kids etc spoiled things) but have just got back into it. I'm amazed at the quality of equipment now available and the fact that most of it is affordable. Hope to get up to speed on current terminology (don't remember wagglers etc from last time I fished). If I ask any daft questions please be gentle

Thanks everyone, I'll do some searching before asking so the level of daftness is within reason. Just got to find a way to stop this work stuff which is ruining my leisure time. Quick question :- how does a "spinning reel" differ from a normal "match" reel? is it line capacity, gear ratio or some magic ingredient (marketing) which makes one reel more suitable than another?

When I was a lad all fixed spool reels were termed "spinning" reels. I'm happy to be corrected but the modern "match" reel has the refinement of a line clip. If a match reel is sturdy then it can indeed be used for spinning where it's given a more wearing time than in float or feeder fishing. What do you want to use your fixed spool reel for!?

Mainly for float but would like the option of spinning if the mood takes. Might just pick up another cheap reel so i've got one for the float rod and one for the spinner.

My most modern reel, until recently I had a number of Mitchell reels which still function perfectly but have no line clip, was free with the Midland Angler mag (Okuma 30).It has the line clip for distance accuracy with the feeder. A similar reel can be purchased for less than £30 and would be quite serviceable for float/feeder fishing and occasional spinning.Most of the expensive reels are for specialist big fish merchants to have a kip whilst the fish hook themselves ( wait for the outcry!!-lol).

ill have you know they are not expensive

3 badger size 90 big pit bait runners £50 bargain

and they dont alwyas hook themselves i use free runnign rigs and my alarm goes off it means the fish has picked up my bait n swam off i still have to strike lol
