If the water you are going to fish contains a fair number of silver fish like roach skimmers and perch then as a start a 13 foot rod will be ideal, use a waggler float with most of the weight set to lock the float with a couple of number 8 shots around half depth and either another number 8 or a number 10 about a foot from the hook, cast out and feed 6 or 8 maggots or pinkies via a catapult, and repeat every couple of minutes, this should see you get a few bites, you can also slowly work the float back towards you and through the area you have feed, I would use reel line of no greater than 3lb breaking strain with a hook lenghth line of 1lb to 1 1/2 lb hooks size to start with would be a size 20 but if bites are iffy or slow be prepared to go smaller.
If feeding pinkies try both single and double on the hook, or a single big maggot.

tackle
with regards to your question re tackle. as your new could i suggest you get second hand rods for now say 1x 13' float rod would,nt pay more than £25 and a 12' ledger rod . maver do a nice one with 4 different tips i paid on e bay £18 + postage. the reason i advise this is all anglers are different we all like our own choice of tackle, you will be no different. one thing is certain after a few months of talking to your fellow anglers you will have a good idea of whats what, so for now keep it simple. one word of advice spend a little time each time you go out to watch and ask questions of other anglers you should never leave a fishery without you learn,t something that applies to everyone.

Hi Ian,
I understand what you mean by buying seconhand equipment justfor now but there are so many good new price deals on new rods/reels I may as well buy new stuff.

Can I have some advice about fishing with a short pole or a whip I think it,s called. It seems a very simple way to do some close in fishing and the rigs are quick and easy to fit.I have seen some whips advertised in the fishing mags and they are reasonably cheap.Or should I get a float rod first.

you should start with the waggler its how every one starts pole fishing my seem simple to start with but it can be a bit baffling to a beginner
but just my oppinion.
