  • How Old is your Club

    Ok guys /galls,

Placed this in the Match section as I feel it touches on the match scene.

I have fish for one club and that club is James Maude Angling Club. The club has ben running for over 36yrs and still has the same secretary Mr Paul Skeldon (skelly to his mates), who does a wonderful job of keeping all the lads in check. We have upwards of 30+ members and several visitors and most matches are fished with around 24 anglers.

So how long has your club been on the Angling scene.
    Regards Billy Boy :)

i have not been in a club for a few years now..they dont seem to be run like the old days.. coaches leaving pubs early in the morning,it was always the highlight of the week for me ..we used to go absolutely every where nene ,trent,thames,severn.avon,ouse..those days anglers were all rounders.today i think most anglers take one route and stick with it...what this has to do with clubs i am not sure..... but talk angling is the nearest thing to a club i am in at the moment...long may she reign

Our club Adroit AC was formed in 1984 and currently has 23 members of which we usually get 18 to 20 turn up for matches. We have about 4 original members remaining from when the club first started. In the early years we were affilaited to the BAA and the WDAA and only had 5 matches a season between March and October, 4 rivers and a canal. We now have 9 matches a year, (1 river, 1 canal and 7 commies )Next year will be our 25th aniversary so I guess we should be looking to do something a bit special. We still have all the records going back to 1984 and it certainly brings back a few memories when you look through it. There have certainly been a few characters passed through the club.

Birmingham Civil Service AC started in 1981, when the old sports club grounds were sold for development and the proceeds used to purchase a new sports ground from Wilmott Breedon adjacent to Birmingham Airport. A bonus was that there was a hundred year old pool within the sports ground boundary. It had been neglected and was full of stunted roach and skimmers with a few ancient carp to 18lb.I was a founder committee member and currently am the only individual remaining from the inaugral committee.
We have since dug and developed a further silver fish only pool in an adjacent field and restocked the original pool.We currently have about 180 members half of whom are associate non civil servants.I've 2 more matches to organise and then will retire from active committee matters.

Carlsberg Tetley AC- Now in our fourth year , How did me manage to go for this long. We started out with 18 members then went to 20 and now have 17.
The Club was started by my Uncle who is sadly no longer with us . He had a dream to start his own club with only his mates in it,if you knew Neil this could have been a bad move and we have had to drag a few people out of bed a little the worse for wear after an evening socialising with our founder before a match.
He always wanted the Club to have its own pool to fish as he saw that the commercials would sooner or later price themselves out sight, Sadly for Neil he never got to see or fish our pool but I am sure he would he would be well impressed with what we have achieved, There were a few who thought we would disband when he died and that we would never manage to sort the hole in the ground into a decent pool but they are very sorry that they left the club before seeing what could be achieved with a lot of hard work.
This is where we are at now hopefully "things can only get better" .I am sure thats a song?????

                Astwood Bank Angling Club

The club was formed 60 years ago and is still going strong, had almost 500 members last season. Still a few of the early members in the club. At the 60th AGM last week an award and life membership was given to one member who has been in the club and served in one position or another on the committee for over 50 years.

Don't think there are many clubs that have been around quiet as long as that.

Gerrards Cross & Uxbridge DAS, founded 1933.
Don't think any of the founder members are still around, but one of our Hon Vice-Presidents joined in the mid 1940s (and still carries out some bailiffing duties !)
I've been a member since 1982 or so,on the committee for most of that time, spending 5 years as secretary and another 5 (so far) as treasurer.

Don't think any of their members post on here, but another local club, Uxbridge Rovers, go back even further, to I think ,1895 ! And still going strong....
