    JAMES MAUDE ANGLING CLUB 1969-2020
    SPRINGVALE FISHERY THE DUCHESS LAKE
    SATURDAY 18TH JULY 2020
WEATHER: OVERCAST WITH THE OCASSIONAL SHOWER WITH A DROP IN TEMPS AND A GOOD CROSS WIND.
THE GRAND OLD DUKE OF YORK
BEVERCOTES is one of those villages whose name proclaims its meaning; it was the home or cote of beavers, and as these animals loved watery abodes it may be assumed that the valley in which the Saxons made their settlement was a marsh. It has ever been one of the smallest of hamlets, and was of so little value at the Conquest that Domesday ignored it, but it is known that it was included in the vast fee of Roger de Busli who had here a manor dependent upon West Markham, held from his successors by the family that took the name of Bevercotes, though they sometimes called it Beverell.
The Lakes take their names from the former owner of the land, the Duke of Newcastle, and the History surrounding them and they run alongside the River Maun.
The Duchess lake takes its name from the Duchess of Newcastle, Georgiana Elizabeth Mundy.
So it wasn’t Mundy but Maudie as the James Maude’s 21 Merry Men marched into the picturesque village of Bevercotes to plight their trade on the Duchess Lake. But it was the Grand Old Duke from Yorkshire, who had just cause for a double celebration as his team of Leeds Utd clinched the Championship league title, while he was taking the crown as Duke of the Duchess. Gary Summerscales showed his class as a silver's angler with 86lb-3oz of silvers to add to his 19lb-15oz x 3 Carp all caught shallow from peg 14. Well done Gary. A sterling performance from yet another consistent angler saw Dave Lilliman pegged on 7 with a mixed bag of Carp and silvers taking a respectable weight of 83lb-9oz all caught shallow. Well done Dave. Terry Wiggins put in a master class of shallow fishing, but suffered to many blank spots to compete for the top slot, taking 76lb-5oz to the scales. Well done Terry. His Fourth Fourth placing in four weeks taking Carp on the tip and pole lines to add to his quarry of silvers, Brian Cox bagged 74lb-3oz from peg 8. Well done Brian. Special mentions go to Lawrence Butcher on his return from lockdown, Lol was pegged on 5, and a commendable weight of 34lb-2oz. Well done Lol. Also, a special mention to Mick Archer who took his first pay packet with the Maude's Club with two nets made up with 25lb-12oz of Carp and a cracking net of silvers 40lb-14oz for a total of 66lb-10. Well done Mick.

Great write up as usual Billy, Sorry you had a bad day, but as my old match fishing partner used to say, you have to have a bad one occasionally to know when you had a good one.
