  • River Don Doncaster.

Well I'm new to fishing after a 30 year layoff and started fishing the Don ,out in the sticks mainly to save embarrassment and I'm having a great time.Chub, bream ,roach, common carp, mirror carp, perch and an eel have all fallen prey to my inept skills.I am float fishing in slack water and I have always caught and never blanked. They tell me Barbel are now common near Doncatraz
( Doncaster prison) I would love to catch one but my skills would have to improve,it is certainly worth giving it go, and it's free fishing on the tidal stretch from Barnby Dun to the Trent or Ouse or wherever it joins.

No reason why you shouldnt catch a barbel - if you have caught all those big fish already then no reason why not.

However I note you say you are fishing in slack water with a float. You will not catch the barbel in the slacks - you need to find some faster running water like below one of the weirs - lay down a big bed of hemp and fish luncheon meat or big halibut pellet over the top on a bomb.

Let us know if you get one!
